UK Gambling Winnings Tax

Gambling winnings are generally tax-free for individuals in the UK, because the tax burden sits with gaming operators, not players. A significant change to taxing gambling profits occurred on 6 October 2001, when the general betting duty charged on bets placed with a UK bookie was abolished. In its place, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) introduced a 15% tax on a bookmaker’s gross profits instead, defined as the difference between the stakes laid and the winnings paid out.

Tax-free for players

The key rule is that if someone gambles for fun, their winnings are not taxed and do not need to be declared to HMRC. Winnings from online casinos, poker, bingo and lotteries, including the National Lottery, are tax-free in the UK. A player's gambling winnings, even large sums, are not caught by the reporting requirements that apply to businesses.

The 2001 tax shift

On 6 October 2001 a duty on the general betting trade, which had been charged on bets made with a bookmaker in the UK, was removed. In its place, the UK government introduced a gross profits tax, charged at 15% on the difference between the stakes laid and the winnings paid out by the operator. Today, the tax regime holds gambling operators responsible, not players.

HMRC's gambling duties cover casino, bookmaking and betting, premises gambling and gaming, and every one of them is charged to the operator.

What can still be taxed later

Gambling winnings are not taxed, but money made from them afterwards can be: interest on winnings kept in savings, and inheritance tax on a large estate, follow the usual rules.

Summing it up

UK gambling winnings are tax-free and do not have to be declared by individuals. The government imposed a 15% tax on bookmakers’ gross profits instead in 2001. Savings interest and inheritance can still make tax appear later.
