The Martingale system promises small profits by doubling bets after each loss and starting over after each win. Yet the fixed 2.70% house edge built into the single-zero roulette wheel, along with table maximums, ensures that the odds remain in the casino's favour.

How Martingale Works

Martingale is a negative-progression staking system that is applied to even-money bets such as red or black or odd or even. After each loss, the stake is doubled, and after a win it goes back to the starting stake. The intended profit for each complete Martingale sequence is one starting stake, no matter how many individual bets it contains. So, for example, losing £5, £10 and then winning £20 leaves the player with a £5 profit.

This attraction of locking in a small gain by recovering losses with a single winning spin is powerful and understandable. Imagine a £5 starting stake that hits a two-spin losing streak. The next bet, for £20, covers those losses, and if it wins the player is £5 up. It can seem like a sure thing, especially for a beginner who sees how rarely many spins in a row go the same way.

Where It Breaks

But the problem is that this strategy only recovers the stake and does not wipe out the house edge. On a single-zero wheel, the chance of losing an even-money bet is 19 in 37, because the zero also loses. The house edge on red or black is a fixed 2.70%, whether you use Martingale or just place your stake and then leave. No betting pattern can eliminate this.

Suppose on a particularly hard-luck night, the wheel brings 7 consecutive losses. Seven losses in a row happen about once in every 106 attempts. After betting £5, £10, £20, £40, £80, £160 and £320, the player has lost £635. That's enough to put a serious dent in most casino-goers' wallets.

Martingale's Real Risk

The cumulative stakes in each Martingale sequence make the consequences severe. After those seven losses, the next bet would be £640, just to win back a £5 profit. If the player cannot place it, or the table maximum is lower, they are already down £635.

Table maximum stakes stop the doubling long before most bankrolls run out. The core fact is that the betting pattern does not influence the house edge on single-zero roulette, regardless of the progression: the system changes the pattern of results, not the maths behind them.
