How to Win Playing Online Craps for Real Money

Don’t worry if you don’t understand the jargon of the different bet types just yet; we cover this further on. The aim of craps is to bet on the outcome of a two-dice roll. It’s really that simple!

Online Craps Rules at the Best Casinos

Here’s a handy reference list of the craps rules, so you get a basic understanding:

  1. The first bet is placed on the ‘pass line
  2. When the dice are rolled for the first time, this is known as the ‘come out roll.’
  3. At this stage, the shooter (you, the player) is trying to establish a ‘point.’
  4. If the sum of the two dice on the first roll is a 7 or an 11, you win. The payout on this is 1:1
  5. If you roll a 2,3 or 12, you lose your bet
  6. On the come-out roll, any total apart from the 2, 3, 7, 11 and 12 now becomes the point number. A disc will be placed on the craps table with ‘ON’ showing next to this number.
  7. The shooter keeps rolling until they get that number again (with the pass line bet remaining each time). If so, they win with a 1:1 payout. If they roll a 7, they lose their pass line bet and need to start again.
  8. The process repeats itself

So, the process of playing craps is simple. The confusion can set in when we start to bring in the different types of bets that are possible.

Craps Casino Table

One of the most popular casino games, the craps table is where the bets are played, and the dice are rolled. You’re at an advantage playing online since you don’t have to worry about the dice hitting the back wall or any other players. Here’s a common craps table layout:

Play Craps Online

Although at first glance, you’re likely to see a load of words and numbers that don’t mean much, the craps table is laid out into the different potential bets you can place. To place a bet on any of the areas, click the chip amount you want to place and then click on an area of the table to place your bet. Many online casinos have a feature that highlights the playing area when you try and place a bet. A green area indicates the bet is possible. A red highlight means the bet isn’t possible now.

Different Online Craps Bets Explained by Casino Deal

This is the point to take a deep breath and concentrate hard. These are the different types of craps bets you can place:

  • Pass
  • Come
  • Don’t pass
  • Don’t come
  • Odds
  • Buy
  • Lay
  • Place
  • Big 6 and 8
  • Field
  • Fire
  • Hard way bets
  • Proposition bets

Pass Line in Online Craps

The pass line bet in craps is generally the first bet to place to establish how the game plays out. This is also known as the ‘come-out roll’. You’ll know this since the ON/OFF disc will show as ‘OFF’. If the disc shows as ‘ON,’ then the next bet is not a come-out roll, and the pass line sequence of the game is over. Click the amount you wish to stake on the pass line and then click the dice to roll. At this stage, if you roll a 7 or an 11, you win. The payout for this is 1:1.

If you roll a 2, 3 or a 12, your pass bet loses. Change your stake as you like and keep rolling until you roll a 4, 5, 6, 8 9 or 10. At this stage, the come-out roll is over, and a point is established. The shooter then must roll that number before rolling a 7. Any other total isn’t a win or a loss; the game just carries on until a 7 or that point number is rolled.

Come Bet in Online Craps

Craps is popular with many VIP highroller casinos, and with all the different bets, we mustn’t confuse a ‘come bet’ with a ‘come-out roll’. A come bet can be placed when a point has been established from the come-out roll. To make a come bet in craps, simply place the chips you wish to bet in the ‘Come’ area on the craps table. So, say you rolled a 10 on your come-out roll. 10 is now the point. If you now place a come bet and the next roll is a 7 or 11, you win. When the roll is a 2, 3 or 12, your come bet loses, just like the pass bet would.

If you roll any other number, that now becomes the point number for the next round. Note that while making a come bet, the pass bet remains in play. So, if you roll a 7 after the point has been established, your pass bet will lose but your come bet wins. Rolling an 11 means the pass bet stays and your come bet wins. A 2, 3 or 12 total means your pass bet remains and your come bet loses.

Don’t Pass and Don’t Come Bets in Online Craps

These are pretty much the opposite to the pass and come bets. If the next roll to be made is a come-out roll, then you can place your chips on the ‘Don’t Pass Bar’ section of the craps table. Select your chips and then click on the ‘Don’t come bar’ section to place your chips. This can be played if the next roll isn’t a come-out roll. The winning/losing circumstances for don’t pass and don’t come bets are:

  • If you roll a 2 or a 3, you win
  • You lose on a 7 or 11
  • A 12 will see you get your stake back
  • Any other number becomes the point
  • If a 7 is rolled before the point number is rolled again, that’s a win. If not, the don’t bet loses

The Odds Bet in Online Craps

An odds bet in craps can be placed after a pass, don’t pass, come or don’t come bet has been placed. Once you know what the point number is, you can then make an odds bet on your pass or come bets. Think of it like backing yourself. So, why then not just place more chips on the pass or come bets? Well, the odds bets are also known as ‘free bets’ in that there’s no house edge on them. This is established because the payout is at the true odds rather than a house-established payout. So, your payout is as exact as the chances of you winning that bet. For an odds bet, this is 6:5. You can buy or lay with an odds bet, and the house can offer single odds or multiple odds on these.

Single Odds or Multiple Odds in Online Craps

When you decide on your online casino for craps, make sure you’re aware of the rules for the odds rates. Casinos aren’t stupid! A single odds payout for an odds bet means that the amount for your odds bet only must be the same as the pass or come bet. If a multiple amount is offered, then your odds bet can be any multiple up to that amount. Even though there’s no house edge, don’t forget that your money is still at risk!

Buy Bet in Online Craps

The buy bet is the odds bet variation, when you’ve placed a pass or come bet previously. It’s common for most online casinos to offer multiple odds of 3x, 4x and 5x for odds bets. If you’re placing a buy bet, the multipliers start with the outside numbers of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10:

  • 3x applies to 4 & 10
  • 4x applies to 5 & 9
  • 5x applies to 6 & 8

You’re still looking to roll one of the above numbers, depending on what the point number is. As a working example, if your original pass bet was £10 and the point number was 4, you can place either x1, x2 or x3, which is £10, £20 or £30. If the point number was a 9 it is £10, £20, £30 or £40, and so on.

Online Craps Lay Bet

Lay odds bets are the opposite of a buy odds bet and can be placed after a don’t pass or don’t come bet. The same multipliers and rules apply; however, the payouts are different since they still reflect true odds. You’re forgiven for thinking the house loses out on these kinds of bets, but don’t forget they still have the edge on the original pass or come bets. The odds bets are at 0% edge, so the casino’s overall advantage isn’t eroded.

Online Craps Place Bets

The place betting area is the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 section of the craps table. Putting your chips down on one or more of the numbers means you want them to show before a point number is established on the come-out roll. The place bet results are:

  • You lose on a 7
  • You win if your number is rolled
  • Nothing happens if any other number is rolled

If any other numbers are rolled, it’s a scratch, and you don’t lose your chips

The ‘Big 6 and 8’ Bet in Online Craps

To place a big 6 and 8 bet, place your chips literally on the big number 6, or the big number 8, on the table. You need either of these to come up before a 7 is rolled. Otherwise, the bet is lost. If any other number is rolled, nothing happens, and the bets remain in play.

Field Bets in Online Craps

By placing your chips on the ‘field’ area of the table, you’re betting on all the numbers showing in this area coming in on the next roll.

  • Winning numbers 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 are paid out at 1:1
  • Winning numbers 2 and 12 are paid out at 2:1, hence the ‘pays double’ indicator around these numbers.
  • Any other number (5, 6, 7 and 8) are losers, and you lose your bet

The Fire Bet in Online Craps

A fire bet in craps is possible when the shooter hits at least four different point numbers in a row before hitting a 7. To recap, these numbers are the same as a place bet: 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

Hard Way Bets in Online Craps

Landing a hard way bet means you’re trying to get a total of 4, 6, 8 or 10 the hard way, by rolling doubles! So, double 2, double 3, double 4 and double 5. You’ll hear casino players say a ‘hard 6’, for example. The bet loses if a 7 is rolled before, or the same total as your hard bet, but as a soft bet. For example, a 1 and a 5 is a soft 6, and your hard way bet would lose.

Proposition Bets in Online Craps

Proposition bets are riskier with a lower chance of occurring. The upside is that they have higher payouts. We’ll go through the odds and payouts of all bets in the next section, but for now, the proposition bets are:

  • Any craps – if 2, 3 or 12 is the next roll
  • Horn bets – these are snake eyes (a total of 2), boxcars (hard 12), ace deuce (a total of 3) and a yo bet (a total of 11)
  • Any 7 – if 7 is rolled next
  • Any 11 – wins if 11 is rolled next

Casino Deal’s Best Craps Strategy

As with most online casino games, it’s always a good idea to lower the house’s edge as much as possible. Since craps has such a diverse range of betting options, this can be a confusing thing to do.

What Is the Best Bet in Craps?

From our craps payouts table, you can see the bets with the lowest house edge are:

  • Pass
  • Don’t pass
  • Come
  • Don’t come

Regularly placing these bets will keep the house edge at a low 1.41%. If you then further back or lay these, then the house edge is lowered even further, depending on the multipliers and amount of times you back or lay them. The only downside to these bets is that they’re not very exciting. You’ll be going through the same process and motions repeatedly. Although the more exciting proposition bets are attractive with their higher payouts, the house edge on these is massive! Unfortunately, a dream of aiming for snake eyes isn’t profitable in the long run.

Craps Bets to Avoid

There are some bets in craps that should be avoided, no matter what. One of these is the big 6 and 8. Why? The payout is low at 1:1 and the house edge is one of the highest at 9.09%. When you compare to the place bets of 6 and 8, these have a higher payout of 6:5 and a significantly lower house edge of 1.52%. Even a hard way 6 or 8 have the same house edge as a big 6 and 8, with a lower chance of occurring and a higher payout.

Protect Your Bankroll

Of prime importance is to make sure you only have access to funds you’re willing to lose. To minimise this amount, consider the following:

  1. Use a combination of PayPal and a separate current account to your main bank account for depositing.
  2. Spread your gambling pot across the different casinos we recommend.
  3. Divide your online casino account by 100 to establish a maximum bet limit of your own.

Use Only the Best Online Casinos

Most online casinos will offer a form of craps, with many not being live but an RNG-based piece of software. No matter which casino you choose to sign up with to play craps, make sure they have the following features:

  1. UK Gambling Commission licence
  2. Partners with the best gaming software providers. Playtech and Microgaming, as examples
  3. Alternative depositing methods such as PayPal, Skrill and Neteller
  4. Welcome bonuses and no deposit bonuses

The above are key features of the best online casinos. In the next section, we focus on casinos that we’ve cherry-picked for you.

That’s a very impressive matched deposit amount. Be sure to check the wagering amount so you know how many times you need to play through the money until you can collect your winnings. Featuring a wide range of other casino games, 24/7 live chat, registered in the UK and Malta, Gala Casino is an excellent option for learning how to play craps.

Craps Online FAQs

Yes! Like all casino games, the house has the edge overall. But that isn’t to say there aren’t bets that will win you some money. Stick with the bets that have a low house advantage such as the come and pass bets. Even better, use casino bonuses to flip the edge in your favour and get one over on the house!

At payouts of 1, 2 and 3:1, and a reasonably low house edge of 2.78%, field bets are up there with the most popular bets. These are a good option to move away from the basic pass and come bets.
