The slot machine industry in Great Britain underwent a significant overhaul in 2021, with new rules designed to make online slot games safer and slower.

The Gambling Commission, which regulates gambling in the UK, introduced a package of changes to online slot games that were aimed at enhancing player protection. The key changes included a ban on features that speed up play, a prohibition on auto-play, and a requirement to clearly display total losses or wins and time played during any online slots session.

Online Slot Design Rules: What Changed

In February 2021, the Gambling Commission announced a set of changes to online slot games that were designed to make them safer and less addictive. The changes, which were fully implemented by online operators by 31 October 2021, included:

  • A ban on features that speed up play or give the illusion of control over the outcome, such as "turbo" spins, "quick spin," and "slam stop."
  • A ban on auto-play, which allows players to set a game to play on its own.
  • A prohibition on sounds or imagery that give the illusion of a win when the return is equal to, or below, the stake.

Additionally, the changes also required online operators to clearly display to the player their total losses or wins and time played during any online slots session.

What Players No Longer See or Do

With the introduction of the new rules, players no longer have access to certain features that were previously available on online slot games. This includes:

  • Auto-play, which allows the game to play on its own.
  • Sounds or imagery that give the illusion of a win when the return is equal to, or below, the stake.

The Stake Limits

In addition to the 2021 changes, 2025 brought maximum stake limits for online slots, with different limits applying to players of different age groups. The limits are:

  • £5 per game cycle for customers aged 25 years or over
  • £2 per game cycle for customers aged 18 to 24 years

Why This Matters for Players

The changes to online slot games in the UK are significant for players for several reasons:

  • Slower game play: The ban on features that speed up play and the minimum 2.5-second game cycle slow down the pace of the game, giving players more time to consider their actions and making it less easy to spend large sums quickly.
  • Less confusion: The 2021 changes also aim to reduce player confusion by banning misleading sounds or imagery that could give the impression of a win when the return is equal to or below the stake.

Online slots remain available in the UK, and players can still lose money playing them. The new measures are designed to slow down play, reduce the risk of losing track of time or money, and give players more information about their spending, but they cannot eliminate the risks associated with online gambling.
