Pontoon vs Blackjack

Pontoon looks like blackjack, but the dealer’s hidden hand and Pontoon-only actions change how information and betting work from the first deal.

Same target, different information

Both games share the aim of reaching a total closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. But Pontoon and blackjack give players different information to base their decisions on. The dealer, called the banker, gives each player and the bank two cards face down.

Pontoon’s own vocabulary

Once their turn starts, each player does one of three actions that sound different but work like blackjack commands: twist means take a card, stick means stand, and buy means take a card while adding to the stake.

Both of the banker’s cards stay face down while players act in Pontoon, unlike blackjack’s face-up dealer card, so every decision is made without seeing either of them.

The stick threshold matters

The smallest total players may keep by sticking is 15, so a player below 15 must twist or buy. In blackjack, a player can stand on any total.

The special hands

Pontoon naming puts an ace plus a 10-value card into its own category, a pontoon; and it pays 2 to 1, where a blackjack usually pays 3 to 2. A five-card total of 21 or less, known as a five-card trick, also pays 2 to 1 in Pontoon.

Don’t assume a pontoon or five-card trick in Pontoon is equivalent to a blackjack or five-card Charlie in another game, though. The Pontoon payouts and naming conventions aren’t universally consistent with other blackjack-like games.

Why the game feels different in practice

Pontoon’s hidden information sets the British card game apart from blackjack.

First, the banker’s concealed hand means you're flying blind in getting to your score, relative to the dealer.

Second, in most versions the banker wins all ties.

Finally, house rules differ, so read the game rules before playing.

So Pontoon borrows 21 as its objective, but the hidden banker hand, its own words for actions and hands, and house-specific rules make the British variant its own trip.
