The roulette wheel is the most important piece of the roulette puzzle. It determines what the winning number is for each game. It‘s worth noting that with virtual roulette and other version of online roulette, there might not always be a wheel; instead, the software uses a random number generator to determine the winning number.

Are All Roulette Wheels the Same?

Roulette Wheel Numbers

On a European roulette wheel, each section is numbered from 0–36. The American wheel will have the additional double-zero, as well as 0–36. The interesting thing about a roulette wheel is that the numbers don’t appear to be in a logical sequence. However, they’re very cleverly distributed so that odd and even numbers, and red and black numbers, are evenly distributed around the wheel. So, no single red number will be adjacent to another red number. Logic means the same is true for black numbers, and the same applies to odd and even numbers. We need to look at European and American wheels further to see how they differ in this respect.

European Roulette Wheel Numbers – Racetrack Bets

The numbers always alternate between black and red, with the exception being 0, which is green. Aside from 0, there are 36 numbers, ranging from 1 to 36. 18 of these are red, 18 are black. 18 are odd, 18 are even. The colouring of the numbers differs as such:

• 1–10, odd numbers are red and even numbers are black
• 11–18, odd numbers are black and even numbers are red
• 19–28, odd numbers are red and even numbers are black
• 29–36, odd numbers are black and even numbers are red

There is also another pattern on the European wheel. The green 0 number being the pivot. Roulette numbers carry a ‘low’ and ‘high’ classification. We’ll cover these exact numbers when we talk about roulette odds. For now, low and high are defined as:

American Roulette Wheel Numbers

Despite the main difference between the two roulette wheels being the inclusion of 00 on the American version, the layout of the numbers is entirely different. The 0 and 00 are opposite each other, both being green. As with the European wheel, red and black numbers alternate. It starts with 1 being red, 2 black, 3 red, etc. Also, the numbers are paired in the 1–36 range and sit opposite each other. 1 is opposite 2, 3 is opposite 4, 5 opposite 6, etc.

Another difference is that the American roulette wheel doesn’t have the sequencing in the left and right halves as the European alternative does. The ‘low’ and ‘high’ split remains the same. Imagining the same split down the middle, over the 0 and 00. Looking at the 0, the left side of the wheel contains:

• Nine low, even numbers 2, 4, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18
• Nine high, odd numbers 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35

The right side contains:

Now you’re pretty much an expert on the roulette wheel, it’s time to shift our focus to the roulette table. This is where you place your bets using your casino chips. Of course, it’s an online table replication, but the sections remain the same.

Again, depending on whether you’re playing on a European or American roulette table, there’s a slight difference. The American table will have the extra 00, and the numbers will more than likely be printed on their side, pointing towards the wheel. The European (and French) versions will have the numbers vertically aligned with the rest of the board.

It can be daunting and, if you’re in this boat, a quick read on will set your mind at rest. We’ll cover the different betting options coming up, but for now, the different areas of the roulette table are:

In order to fully understand exactly where you can place your bets, we need to go through them all individually. We then move on to talk about the odds for the different types of bets.

Roulette Inside Bets

The inside bets area is the part of the table that purely contains the numbers. This is 0–36 on European tables and 0–36 and 00 on American versions. To the left of the numbered area will be the 0 and 00. The rest of the numbers then increase in a snake-like pattern, starting with 1 in the bottom left of the inside bets area. This pattern holds no meaning when it comes to placing your bets.
There are seven main types of bets in the inside bets area:

What is a Straight Up Bet in Roulette?

A straight up bet in roulette is when you bet on a single number. In order to do this, place a chip on any single number.

Split Bet

A split bet is when you bet on two numbers. This is done by placing at least one chip on the line separating the two numbers you wish to bet on.

Roulette Street Bet

A roulette street bet is when you bet on three numbers in one of the columns. To place a street bet in roulette, place one or more chips on the outer line of the column. For example, if you wish to bet on 4, 5 and 6, place the chip(s) on the outer line next to the 6.

Trio Bet

Another three-number bet, the trio bet in roulette is when you bet on the 0 (plus the 00 in American roulette) and two other adjacent numbers. To do so, place at least one chip on the corner of the two numbers next to the 0. For example, if you wish to bet on 0, 1 and 2, place the chip(s) on the corner of 1 and 2 that is next to the 0.

What is a Corner Bet in Roulette?

A roulette corner bet is when you bet on one of four numbers being the winner. Place at least one chip on the corners that are common to the four numbers. For example, to bet on 5, 6, 8 and 9, place a chip(s) on the crossed lines between these four numbers.

What is a Basket Bet in Roulette?

The roulette basket bet is when you bet on 0, 1, 2 and 3 in European roulette. In American roulette, the basket bet includes the 00 too. To make this bet, place at least one chip on the common corner of the 1, 2, 3 and 0/00.

What is a Line Bet in Roulette?

A line bet is betting on a string of six numbers winning. To make this bet, place at least one chip on the outside intersecting lines of the two columns of numbers.

Roulette Outside Bets

The outside bets area is any area that’s outside the numbered inside bets area. The betting options here are more hybrid than betting on individual numbers. The options for outside bets are:

• 1st 12
• 2nd 12
• 3rd 12
• 1 – 18
• Even
• Red (depicted by a red triangle)
• Black (depicted by a black triangle)
• Odd
• 19 – 36
• 2 to 1 – these options sit at the end of the inside bets area

Compared to inside bets, outside bets in roulette are more obvious, since they have specifically named areas for you to place your chips. They are all self-explanatory for the most part, but just in case you need an explanation of each, here they are:

Dozens Bets in Roulette

Dozens bets in roulette are very popular bets. There are three different dozens you can bet on:

• 1st 12
• 2nd 12
• 3rd 12

Simply place a chip on each section you wish to bet on. Bets on “1st 12” will mean that if any number from 1 to 12 is the winning number, you win. “2nd 12” is 13 – 24 and “3rd 12” is 25 – 36.

Low and High Bets

By placing chips on the “1–18” section, you’re betting that the ball will land on any number between 1 and 18. You’re placing what’s known as a low bet. Conversely, placing chips on the “19–36” section means you want the ball to land on any number between 19 and 36. This is known as a high bet.

Can You Just Bet on Red or Black?

You most certainly can! Simply place any number of chips on either the ‘red’ or ‘black’ section. Thanks to Wesley Snipes in the blockbuster movie “Passenger 57”, many people tend to favour black over red. Don’t be fooled into thinking that there’s a 50/50 chance of red or black coming up. Don’t forget about that little old green 0 (and 00 for American roulette)!

What is a Column Bet in Roulette?

A column bet in roulette is when you bet on one of these three columns on the roulette table:

• 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31 and 34
• 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32 and 35
• 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36

In order to place any column bets, simply place any number of chips on the “2 to 1” section at the end of the targeted column. Why is the section labelled “2 to 1?” Purely because that’s the payout rate for a column bet.

Roulette Track/Racetrack

Aside from the main roulette betting table, you might also notice an oval-shaped betting area. This is known as the roulette track or roulette racetrack. Why? Purely because it’s in the familiar shape of a track that other sports use for racing. The roulette track is mainly found in online French roulette. It might also be available across other European roulette tables but is most common to the French version of the game. This area allows you to place a variety of bets without having to place multiple chips across lots of individual bets.

You may or may not have heard of these also being known as call bets or announced bets. This means that you can call out the names of the areas to the croupier, or live dealer, if you wish to bet on this section of the roulette board. With online roulette, you will need to specifically place the chips on the correct section. You may need to select an advanced betting option in order to do this. The track is the area where you can place the grouped bets we mentioned earlier:

1. Voisins du Zéro – a Neighbours Bet
2. Tiers du Cylindre – Thirds of the Wheel
3. Orphelins – an Orphan Bet

These make more sense when translated literally from French to English.

What is a Neighbour’s Bet in Roulette?

Voisins du zéro means ‘neighbours of zero.’ In roulette, this is known as a neighbour bet. This is where minimum bets are placed on the numbers closest to 0 on the roulette wheel. The range goes from 22 to the left of 0, all the way around through 0 to the 25 on the right. In order as they appear on the roulette wheel, these are: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2 and 25.

The betting on these aren’t straight bets. If you’ve read our section above on inside bets, you’d know what a straight bet is. It’s a little more complicated than that. The voisins du zéro/neighbour bet is a 9-chip bet that covers the following:

• 1 x trio bet – 2 chips covering 0, 2 and 3
• 1 x corner bet – 2 chips covering 25, 26, 28 and 29
• 5 x split bets – 1 chip on each of the following:
• 4 and 7
• 12 and 15
• 18 and 21
• 19 and 22
• 32 and 35

Luckily for you, you don’t need to place these manually. Since it’s a call bet, the croupier will handle this for you, and in an online casino, you just select the option, which will sometimes just say ‘voisins’.

Tiers du Cylindre

Again translated from French to English, “tiers du cylindre” means “thirds of the wheel.” Although the translation is for multiple thirds, the bet only covers one-third of the multi-wheel; the numbers being the segment from 27 around to 33. The tiers du cylindre bet is a 6-piece bet. One chip is bet on each of the following splits:

• 5 and 8

What is Orphelins in Roulette?

Once more, translated from French to English, “orphelins” means “orphans.” How does this fit into roulette? The orphelins bet covers the rest of the numbers not covered by voisins du zéro and tiers du cylindre. Hence, they are orphans, the remainder. The numbers covered by an orphelins bet are 1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31 and 34. A 5-chip bet is placed as such:

The safest bet in roulette is a bet that has the highest chance of winning. These are the even-money bets. From our above information, these are:

Many beginners believe that there’s a 50/50 chance of winning from a wheel spin when using any of these betting options. Sadly, they are mistaken. The inclusion of the 0 in European and French roulette and the additional 00 in American roulette reduces the odds of the even-money bets from 50% down to 48.6% and 47.4% respectively.

#1. Fibonacci Roulette Strategy

You might have heard of the Fibonacci sequence before since it’s found across many different things to do with this crazy world. Luckily for you, you can apply it as a roulette strategy. Care needs to be taken though, since it tries to recover losing stakes. We don’t advise this as a great strategy as it’s not a responsible way of betting. In order to create the sequence, we start with the number 1 and add the previous two numbers together to generate the next.

The sequence is: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, and so on…

In terms of roulette, you apply the above the number as a factor to the stake. So, if you started with £1, it would stay as £1, then £2, £3, £5, etc., on each losing bet. As soon as you hit a winning bet, you start the sequence from the beginning.

#2. Martingale Roulette Strategy

The Martingale is similar to the Fibonacci sequence, but is more aggressive. Instead of adding the previous two numbers together, it doubles the previous number:

The sequence is: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and son on…

Again, you multiply your stake by the factored number above. So, if you started with £1, on each losing bet, you’d stake £2, then £4, £8, £16, £32, etc. If you compare this to Fibonacci, you can see the numbers increase exponentially, which can mean greater losses very quickly, OR recovering previous losses and banking a small profit. Use this strategy with care and not if you’re a roulette beginner!

#3. The Paroli Roulette Strategy

We at Casino Deal aren’t fans of negative progressive strategies, which are ones that increase stakes as the losing streak goes on. So, we’ve included the positive progressive roulette strategy of Paroli. It does the opposite of Fibonacci and Martingale in that the stakes increase for every winning bet. Basically, you bet on the outside bets, since the odds of winning are the greatest here, and leave your original stake and all your winnings on the table. As soon as you lose, you revert back to your original stake.

The key is to decide how many winning progressions (bets) you go through before you reset. You shouldn’t reset as soon as you lose, since you end up with just your original stake. For example, if your original bet is £1 and you win, your next is £2, since the outside even-money bets payout at 1:1. If you win again, the next bet is £4, then it’s £7, and so it increases.

This is a strategy that’s a lot more forgiving on your blood pressure and nerves but should still be handled with care. It takes advantage of winning runs and protects your bankroll on losing runs, only risking a fixed amount.

#4. The D’Alembert Strategy

Yet another loss-chasing strategy, the D’Alembert roulette strategy is much more manageable than Martingale and Fibonacci. It focuses on the even-money outside bets in that there is a near 50-50 chance that each bet will win… 48.6% actually. This is where gamblers’ fallacy comes in, in that there is nothing to say that in any given amount of bets that the result will match the supposed odds of a roulette bet winning.

The progression isn’t as harsh. With each losing bet, you only add another chip that’s the same amount as the original. As soon as you hit a win, your next bet is reduced by that single chip amount. Here it is in table form:

#5. The James Bond Roulette Betting Strategy

It’s time to move away from the progressive loss-leading strategies we’ve looked at. The James Bond roulette strategy is a flat-staking system. Although 007 favoured Baccarat and Poker, he dabbled in roulette in the Casino Royale book and tried to beat the house with this system.

Needless to say, the system doesn’t beat the house. There isn’t a strategy that does, and the only thing that can bring you close is by chasing your losses. The thought behind this strategy is to cover a large amount of the roulette table with as few chips as possible. And so, the staking is, based on a £100 bet:

This covers a total of 25 out of the 37 numbers, giving you 67.6% chance of winning. But of course, the payout amounts aren’t enough to cover losing 32.4% chance of losing. Even if you lose a round of roulette, you stick to the same amount each time. Despite this being a popular strategy, it just doesn’t work in the long run. It’s fun but broken.

Casino Deal’s Answer to: Is Roulette Rigged?

It depends as to how you define the word ‘rigged.’ It’s common and public knowledge that all casinos and their table games and slots have a house edge. That’s the prime feature of how online casinos earn real money.

You might have noticed that our analysis of the different payouts and odds of the different bets don’t correlate. Let’s take the straight up bet as an example. The odds of you winning is 2.7% in European roulette (1 in 37). The payout for a straight up bet is 35:1. For there to be no house edge at all, the payout would need to be 37:1. Since the payout is lower, an automatic house edge is created.
